High Ankle Sprain

But what is an high ankle sprain?

An high ankle sprain is an injury to the ligaments in  the ankle. Your ligaments are tissues that hold the bones of your ankle together.

What causes ankle sprains?

• If your foot hits the ground at an angle with too much force that can cause a sprain.

What are the common symptoms of an high ankle sprain?

  • Ankle Pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • A popping sound during the injury

There are three grades that classify ankle sprains:

Grade 1

Some slight stretching and damage to the fibers of the ligaments. There will be minimal tenderness and some swelling. For treatment there isn’t a need for a splint/cast but only apply enough weight to the foot as you can tolerate. Also to get back to

•Grade 2

Complete tears of the fibers in the ligament. Moderate swelling and tenderness with possible instability and a decreased range of motion. For treatment your ankle should be immobilized with an air splint and physical therapy will help recovery.

•Grade 3

Complete tear or rupture of the ligament. This is a very severe high ankle sprain with significant swelling and instability with tenderness. Treatments are immobilization, physical therapy for a long period of time, and possibly even surgery reconstruction.

What treatments can I do at home?

  • Rest your ankle and elevate it
  • Do not walk on it
  • Ice to keep swelling down for 20 minutes three to four times a day

Rehabilitation is a must for recovery. Ultrasound is helpful, providing a quicker healing process and reducing inflammation.
